Over the last couple of weeks, Year 3 have been testing the properties of different rocks. We have been testing:

marble, pumice, granite, slate, limestone and chalk.

First we examined the hardness of various rocks by scratching with a nail to see whether they crumbled or left a mark. To make sure we carried out a fair test, we tried to scratch with the same pressure on each rock. (Photos coming...)

The following week, we tested the permeability of each rock (whether liquid or gas could pass through it) by putting them into beakers of water and looking for bubbles (air being pushed out) or the water turning cloudy. (Photos coming)
