Planting seeds in Science - May 2023
What does a seed need to germinate? We are testing this out by planting our own Sunflower seeds as well as some experimental ones - without soil, without light or without water. We predicted how many days it would take for the seeds to germinate and what would happen to our experimental seeds.
So what happened?
The seeds took 4 days to germinate which a couple of the children guessed. The experimental seeds surprised some of the class - the one without soil actually produced roots in the water but nothing else. The seed without water did nothing. The seed without light did germinate and start growing but the growth was yellow rather than green and quite weak. This week we learned about photosynthesis so the class knew that light was needed for the plant to produce it's own food and grow healthy and strong.
