INTENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND IMPACT

SCIENCE INTENT

We use the National Primary Curriculum to ensure that learners develop scientific and a conceptual understanding of the world through the foundations of biology, chemistry and physics. We aim to inspire and excite learners’ curiosity so that they can develop the scientific skills and knowledge which will enable them to rationally explain the world around them. Clewer Green scientists will develop their skills to communicate and explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes.

The intent of the Science programme is to ensure that all pupils are stimulated to

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of scientific enquiry that help answer scientific questions about the world.
  • Equip themselves with scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today and in the future

SCIENCE IMPLEMENTATION

At Clewer Green, Science is taught once a week and children use their “scientific skills” in every lesson.

Children acquire scientific knowledge and language necessary for the understanding of scientific concepts. They develop skills such as observing, pattern seeking, identifying, classifying and grouping, predicting, testing and researching. Learning builds on previously secured knowledge to promote progression.

Where possible science is linked to other subjects to re-inforce scientific knowledge and to allow children to practise their skills. Children are taught age-appropriate scientific language and are encouraged to use this during discussion about the world around them. Children are encouraged to question and explain, discuss and argue using relevant evidence in support. Computers and ICT skills may be used in support of their investigations.

SCIENCE IMPACT

Children will aim high and take responsibility for their learning to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding. They will be equipped with knowledge to understand the uses and implications of Science today and in the future. Children will be courageous and ask questions. They will share their ideas as they work scientifically and listen to the ideas of others to help their own understanding. They will learn to use their scientific skills across different areas of the curriculum.

The aim of the Science programme is to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics,
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them,
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
