Combermere Barracks 2022 - 14 May 2022

Foundation Stage had a wonderful visit to Combermere Barracks last week. The weather was kind to us and the children walked there all very excited and looking forward to an exciting day. Since our last visit the Household Cavalry have left and it is now the home of the Welsh Guards. However we were still treated to a fantastic day. The children were able to look for all sorts of interesting historical artefacts in the museum and were able to climb up into the saddle of a model horse. They tried on a whole variety of hats, jackets and boots and had a go at blowing the trumpet. They were also able to see the farrier at work up at stables where they also fed some of the horses and watched some of the soldiers training on horseback. Some children were also lucky enough to see the horse drawn carriage go out on its way to the Great Park. They ended their visit with a picnic on the grass, where they had a surprise visit from Hamish's daddy who, although part of the Coldstream Guards, is currently based there. He very kindly brought along his bearskin for all the children to try on!  Although everyone was very tired walking back to school, the children somehow found enough energy to stop for a play at the park on the way back! Huge thanks go to Peter Storer, who despite retirement returned especially to look after us and also to Ted who now runs the museum. They were most grateful to those parents who donated money towards the upkeep of the museum.
